“I drew these back in August in response to all the female self-pleasure art I see on instagram by male artists. I wanted to create something about women BY A WOMAN, and I really encourage other women to do the same. I don’t dig this wave of male artists profiting from the exploitation of women’s sexuality in art. It’s been a long road for women to take back control of how our bodies & experiences are represented, & now that we are being heard, some male artists, emboldened by their male privilege see a profitable opportunity to represent us. Do you think these men appreciate the female sexual organ outside of its function to procreate? Do you think they can appreciate or be sympathetic to our experiences and relationships with our changing bodies over time? With being sexualised from an early age? Do you think they’re interested in our relationship to our bodies during menstruation? Do you think they’re interested in the change in consistency of the lining of our uteral discharge throughout the month? Or the lack of lining and need to lubricate when entering menopause? Do you think they’re interested in incontinence and other complications that can arise from childbirth?
No they don’t care about that. For them it’s ‘hot’, ‘edgy’ and ‘cool’ to sexualise women in art. They feel entitled to our most intimate spaces, and they feel entitled to profit from our bodies and sexuality by entering and representing these spaces from the perspective of the patriarchy. They view our vaginas in a ‘pop art’ kind of way. A way that is not based in reality.
Can men with male sexual organs ever really have any kind of understanding of what it’s like for a woman to pleasure herself when female biology has more than twice the nerves on the clitoris then males have on their sexual organ. And when the female sexual organ & body can have 11+ different kinds of orgasms, whilst male biology can only have 2 kinds of orgasms. . Please support female artists expressing female experiences. Please cut these men out of assuming access to our most intimate spaces and profiting from those spaces. Please tell your own stories and take that power away from men who assume to tell them for you.” - Ouvra (Maria Rozalia Finna)
